The motives for participating in the strike vary from person to person. To the question "What was your personal attitude towards stopping work?" for workers over the age of 50, the most typical answer is: "I acted like everyone else"; for workers from 30 to 50 years old — "I was sure that this was the only right way"; for older IT specialists — "I internally disagreed, but I was not asked." Workers under the age of 30 are most likely to take the position: "We discussed everything with our comrades and made a common decision."
A comparison of the responses of the participants of the July and November strikes shows their significant similarity. The smallest number of respondents in both Kuzbass and Donbass, as well as in Vorkuta, chose the answer: "I did not agree internally..." (from 3 to 14% for mines in three regions). In second place "from below" is the motive "I acted like everyone else" (from 8 to 21%). However, the overwhelming majority (70% of respondents in Kuzbass and Donbass and 67% of respondents in Vorkuta) put forward two other motives indicating conscious and voluntary participation in the strike, namely: "I was sure that this was the only right way" and "We discussed everything with our comrades and made a common decision." At the same time, the responses of Vorkutins are somewhat dominated by the motives of a collective decision, in the responses of respondents from Kuzbass and Donbass — the motives of their own choice; this difference is especially pronounced when comparing the responses of young respondents. The most politicized part of Vorkutins demonstrates a higher (76%) level of conscious choice, but even in this group the motive associated with the collective decision to participate in the strike prevails.
In light of this evidence of commitment to collectivism, it is natural that the question "How have the attitudes of people in your team changed during the strike?" workers in Vorkuta were 4 times more likely to say "improved" than "worsened". Positive responses prevail over negative ones even when it comes to family relationships. The difference from the summer situation in Donbass and Kuzbass is the lesser severity of the positive impact of the strike on the climate in the family, as well as on relations in the city (village) as a whole: almost 1/4 of respondents in Vorkuta found that relations deteriorated (this answer is most typical for miners living in the city of Vorkuta itself, and not in the village of Vorgashorsky). The more difficult conditions in which the autumn strike took place in Vorkuta, apparently, led to the fact that relations between individual teams could worsen. This probability was stated by more than 40% of respondents aged 30-50 years, more than 50% of ITR, however, less than 1/3 of the politicized respondents think so.
The negative psychological consequences of the strike in Vorkuta should also include the relatively high concern of its participants about possible repression. If the miners surveyed in August by a majority of 50-60% in all age groups replied that there was no danger of persecution of the strike participants after its end, then in Vorkuta in December only the oldest (very few) respondents had the same level of confidence. In other age groups, about 40% of respondents felt that harassment was likely. Let us repeat that these people consider the court's decision on the illegality of the strike to be unfair; therefore, the sanctions they fear do not look in their eyes like deserved punishment, but repression and illegal persecution. However, these concerns have not yet had a significant impact on their behavior.: they do not abandon the strike as a method of struggle. The judgment "nothing can be achieved by strikes" even at the Vorgashorskaya mine, where the strike took on a protracted character, was supported by no more than 4.3% of respondents, that is, less than in the Kuzbass and Donbass as a whole in August 1989.
